TPG's complete guide to cruising from Floridas Port Canaveral

The faith in the PT6 engine is so great that some flight departments that operate medium- and long-range business jets have added a PC-12 to their fleets for missions that don’t make sense in the jets. There is a booming passenger charter business flown in PC-12s, and passengers don’t give the single engine a second thought. And in real-world operation the PC-12 safety record has been better than that of turboprop twins.

Envelope protection against excessive bank angles is also included as standard equipment. In terms of avionics, the PC-12NGX is equipped with an advanced touchscreen-controlled avionics suite, known as the Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACE). The ACE system integrates various functions, including flight management, communication and navigation, into a user-friendly interface, enhancing pilot efficiency and reducing workload.

The Future of Turboprop Technology

Noise in the passenger cabin was low, but louder than in a comparable jet. Pilatus claims the PC-12's cabin noise level is 4dB lower than the King Air's. Cabin noise was reduced somewhat when the divider doors for the forward lavatory, just aft of the cockpit, were extended. Given the PC-12's long range, the lavatory is a popular option, and is standard in the executive configuration chosen by 95% of buyers. The first part of the climb was hand flown, as we followed vectors along our route of flight.

With the new PC-12 NGX, scheduled maintenance intervals have been extended to 600 flight hours, which provides significant cost savings. The time-between-overhaul period has also been increased from 4,000 to 5,000 hours, thereby reducing the cost of operating the PC-12 NGX even further, making it the undisputed leader in its class. The completely redesigned cabin comes in six different BMW Designworks’ interiors.

Cocoa Beach isn't actually one beach but consists of a string of beaches that range 72 miles along the Atlantic Coast. Book a cruise parking and shuttle package so you can leave your vehicle at the hotel during your voyage. Double rooms feature two queen beds -- a bonus over hotels that only offer double beds, a less-than-family-friendly arrangement. The estimated cost from MCO to Port Canaveral is about $114 one-way for a standard vehicle that accommodates three people. You can use the companion certificates that the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card (how to use Alaska's companion fare) offers as well as several Delta cobranded credit cards.

Many countries will not issue visas to passports within six months of expiry. Next, list every country that you may wish to stop in and those in peripheral waters. Check the visa requirements carefully because the devil is in the details, especially if you have a multinational crew. Many countries require no visas if your stay is relatively short, or issue visas upon arrival.

The PC-12 NG has every system, except those related to a twin instead of a single, as those other airplanes do. The PC-12 NG is a single-pilot airplane (most King Airs and many Citations are as well), so it’s laid out to accommodate that, with controls and switches arranged to keep them within reach. At the same time, flying the PC-12 NG is not like flying a high-performance single. There are systems to be learned, from pressurization to turbine management, there’s a nicely implemented crew alerting system (CAS), emergency oxygen and emergency gear extension, among many others. The FAA doesn’t require a type rating for the PC-12 NG, as it’s neither a turbojet (a seemingly arbitrary distinction these days) nor a 12,500-pound airplane. Luckily, the insurance companies have stepped in to mandate regular recurrent training for their customers who fly PC-12 NGs (as well as other similarly complex airplanes commonly flown by owner-pilots).

This truncates the time to linger in favorite anchorages or tend to inevitable breakdowns and delays. Leaving as early as late January might technically put one out into the Pacific during the official cyclone season, but the statistical chances of a storm developing this far to the east are slim. Now, this is not to say that there are no competitors of the PC-12 NG. They generally offer something that the PC-12 NG lacks, most typically high cruise speeds.

As with the Western Caribbean, seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises are the most common itinerary length. The shortest options are four nights, typically visiting only Grand Turk or Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The longest, around 10 to 12 nights, will often include Southern Caribbean ports or start from more northerly home ports. Plus, cruise ships can change course to avoid bad weather, such as hurricanes, so you can salvage your beach vacation when a storm is headed toward a particular island by cruising to a different one. If you booked a land-based stay, you'd be forced to cancel — or hunker down and wait for the rain and winds to pass.

One of the key factors contributing to the PC-12’s success is its adaptability across various aviation sectors. It seamlessly combines the capabilities of a business jet and a leisure aircraft, catering to the diverse needs of both corporate travelers and adventure enthusiasts. This adaptability is due to its modern design and performance characteristics.

To get a close-up look I went to Pilatus’ American headquarters at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Denver, Colorado, and met with Pilatus’ chief pilot Jed Johnson and Tom Aniello, vice president of marketing. The display screens have higher contrast and resolution than the PC–12’s earlier Honeywell Apex displays. Throw in airborne weather radar, SiriusXM datalink weather, global graphic weather, emergency descent management, and envelope protection, and you’ve got a panel every bit as capable as that of a large business jet. There’s even the capability for controller-pilot datalink communications, should you need to fly to Europe.

With the NG, however, the cabin appointments are better and the airplane is getting closer to its competition in that category. Pilatus offers a variety of interiors for executive, high-density, cargo or a combination of cargo and passenger missions. Even with a typical six-seat executive interior, there is still gobs of space in the aft cabin for baggage. You can even load your Harley through the big cargo door, as Pilatus has demonstrated at many airshows.

At that point we’d top the tanks on the 12 with jet-A and ride the prevailing westerlies nonstop to Austin, a five-plus-hour, 1,500 nm trip we’d likely fly at 270 at best true. Once the gear is extended, the aircraft can be accelerated to Vmo/Mmo. Descent rates approaching 9,000ft/min were achieved during flight testing, says Schneider.

With engine and propeller overhaul reserve expenses approaching $100/h, a single engine can significantly reduce operating costs. The other significant economic benefit of a single compared with a twin is acquisition cost. Comparably equipped, a PC-12 costs $1.7 million less than a B200. The PC–12 NGX also comes with new propeller and engine controls.

For something a little different, try SeaDream Yacht Club for a super-small ship that feels like a private yacht, complete with an emphasis on alfresco recreation and dining. Star Clippers appeals to sailing enthusiasts with its masted ships, simple entertainment and emphasis on water sports. If you consider the best Caribbean cruise lines to be the ones with the most ship and itinerary choices, look to the big-ship lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. You'll be hard-pressed to find a cruise line that does not sail to the Caribbean at least for a few months a year. The big-ship lines will station multiple ships in this region year-round, with additional ships swinging by during the colder months.
