Of this diverse group, only the B200 offers a cabin anywhere near as large as the PC-12's. The NGX cabin is markedly improved from that of its predecessor. To be sure, it retains the split personality (able to handle cargo and/or passengers) and big aft door that so identify the Pilatus brand. But the new leather seats are taller and narrower, can fully recline, and all have quick-release attach points for turning seating areas into cargo storage; before, only the last two seats were quick release. Thanks to a redesigned seat base there’s one inch more headroom, and gone are the old-style storage drawers that opened into the aisle. Other nice touches include downwash lighting, USB and AC charging outlets, an air conditioning system that puts out more volume of air at less velocity, optional footrests, and—yes—bigger cup holders.

Before I taxied to the 7,000-foot-long Runway 30L at KBJC, the ATIS warned of potential slick spots along the way. The beauty of Epic during taxi is its SmartRunway’s feature, which not only pinpoints the taxiways and runways but also shows ADS-B traffic. The Pilatus PC-12NG is surprisingly stable, even in heavy crosswinds, making this an aircraft that is robust and well-suited for the northern latitudes where winds are heavy. A max cross-wind of 30 knots requires no flaps used for take-off, while 15 degrees of flaps requires the maximum cross-wind to be no more than 25 knots. With that, your total cost of $690 per hour for fixed costs, added to $227 for maintenance and reserves, and added to $396 per hour for fuel will give you a total hourly cost to operate of a remarkably cheap $1,313. Further upgrades to the avionics and automation of the NG don’t go quite so far.

It featured an increased maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 9,039 lbs (4,100 kg), allowing for higher payload capacity. This variant also incorporated various aerodynamic improvements to enhance fuel efficiency and performance.

BMW Designworks created more-comfortable seating reminiscent of that automaker’s ground-based products. The autopilot in the Apex system is excellent and shows off its jet heritage by flying the NG with smoothness and precision. I watched the Apex system fly several approaches, including automatically entering holds and procedure turns and exhibiting all of the stuff that is expected for new avionics systems but is still amazing.
The flare was started at 10ft, with constantly increasing back-pressure until touchdown. For the latter part of the climb the autopilot was engaged, while a constant ITT of 725°C was set manually during the 140kt climb. From brake release at the 5,680ft-high airport to levelling off at FL280 (28,000ft) took 21min. Once level, the autopilot did an admirable job of maintaining altitude and following flight-management system lateral navigation commands. Although trip fuel burn is a significant part of operating costs, it does not tell the whole story. Compared with a twin-turboprop, the PC-12 has half the engines and propellers to maintain.
